Common Pallet Questions

There’s a lot of jargon in the pallet industry. Here’s a simple description of the different grades:

  • Grade AAA: These are the best of the best used pallets. They typically look nearly new, with minimal signs of wear, including stains, cracks or other damage. They’re great for shipments where an end user may see the pallet while offering a more cost effective option than brand new.
  • Grade A (aka #1): These are recycled, used pallets that still look great. They may have minimal visible damage or repair, but the integrity of the pallet is not affected. Aesthetically, these are beautiful pallets and they’re budget friendly.
  • Grade B (aka #2): Just like the grades before them, these are a strong, used pallet option. They differ from A & AAA for they typically have larger visible repairs. These repairs might include an added stringer board for durability, or fully replaced deck boards. They may also have more noticeable weathering. They’re great for companies looking to stay within budget and protect their shipments, without as much care for pallet aesthetics.
  • Food Grade: Pallets meeting this grade are free from mold, visible contaminants, or chemical contamination as outlined by the FSMA regulations. They do not require heat treatment.
  • GMA Pallets: These are standardized 48×40 size pallets named after the Grocery Manufacturers Association (now the Consumer Brands Association). While they aren’t a specific “grade” of pallet, GMA is a common size descriptor to outline the 48×40 spec of this style pallet. GMAs may come in Grades AAA, A, or B as described above.

Wooden pallets and crates need to be heat treated when they’re used to export goods. International Standards (ISPM15) requires wooden pallets, crates, or other wooden materials traveling internationally to be heat-treated or treated with methyl bromide fumigation to prevent the spread of pests and invasive species. Once treated, the wood is marked with a stamp signifying it’s safe for international travel. This is sometimes referred to as a “wheat stamp” due to its appearance.

Food Grade Pallets do not require heat treatment. Sometimes used to control mold, heat treatment is available for food grade pallets, but it is not required.

In the US, although custom sizes are widely available, the most common size is 48×40 inches. In Europe, there are a set of standard sizes, called “Euros”. The 48×40 size was standardized by GMA requirement. It fits in most pallet racking for warehouse storage.
