The Science of Pallet Grading: What’s the Real Difference Between Grade A and B?

I get this question almost every day from operations managers across the Milwaukee area: “Rodney, what am I actually paying for when I buy a Grade A pallet instead of a Grade B?”

It’s a fair question, because “Grade A” and “Grade B” sound like a simple quality ladder — like one is just “better” than the other. But that’s not how grading works, and treating it that way is exactly how good companies end up overpaying for one job and under-spec’ing another. The truth is more useful than a ranking: grading is a description of a pallet’s structural history, and once you understand the science behind it, you can match the right grade to the right job and stop leaving money on the table.

Let me walk you through what these grades really mean, the way I’d explain it standing on my own warehouse floor here in southeastern Wisconsin.

Grading Is About Repairs, Not Just “Quality”

Here’s the single most important thing to understand: pallet grade is largely a function of what’s been repaired. When a recycled pallet comes back into the supply chain, it gets inspected and sorted by the condition of its load-bearing components — primarily the stringers, the parallel beams that run beneath the deck boards and carry the weight.

A pallet earns its grade based on how much intervention it took to make it sound again. No repairs to the stringers means a higher grade. Patched or reinforced stringers mean a lower grade. That’s the science in a sentence — everything else is detail.

Grade A: The Retail-Ready Standard

One point that surprises a lot of people: a properly vetted recycled Grade A pallet performs nearly identically to a brand-new one. Grade B is where the misunderstandings start. People hear “Grade B” and assume “weak” or “worn out.” That’s wrong. A Grade B pallet is a gently used, fully functional pallet that may have “plugs” — additional support boards added to the stringers to restore strength.

Here’s the key: those repairs make the pallet just as capable of carrying heavy loads. The difference isn’t structural capacity — it’s cosmetics and repair history. And that’s exactly why Grade B is often the smarter, more logical buy.

I recommend Grade B for:

  • Internal warehouse storage, where appearance is irrelevant
  • One-way shipping to a customer who won’t return the pallet
  • Any application where you’re paying for looks you don’t need

If you’re using new Grade A pallets to store inventory in your own racks or for one-way trips, you’re very likely overspending. I can usually find a Grade B or recycled option that does the identical job for around 30% less.

The “Combo” Pallet: The Logical Middle Ground

Not every decision is binary. One of my favorite solutions is the Combo pallet — a pallet built from a mix of new and recycled components. The logic is simple: you get the strength of new stringers (the part that matters most for load-bearing) combined with the cost savings of recycled deck boards. It’s a middle-ground option that gives a lot of my Milwaukee-area clients the durability they need at a price that makes sense.

Where Grading Gets Stricter: Food and Export

Grade selection isn’t just about budget — sometimes it’s about compliance, and that’s where the science gets non-negotiable.

For food and beverage clients, I never allow Grade B pallets into the picture. The “lead” or “companion” stringer repairs that define many Grade B pallets create crevices where dust and organic matter collect — a genuine contamination risk. For those environments I spec Grade A food-grade pallets, with stringent screening for visible contaminents, and I keep the wood’s moisture content below 19% to keep mold from ever getting a foothold. Upon special request, we have the ability to keep moisture content down to even lower levels.

For international shipping, the grade conversation merges with compliance. Export pallets need ISPM-15 heat treatment and a legible IPPC stamp regardless of cosmetic grade — and if a pallet is repaired after treatment, its compliance is broken and it has to be re-treated. Grade and compliance work together, but they aren’t the same thing.

When No Standard Grade Fits

Sometimes the real answer isn’t Grade A or Grade B — it’s neither. If your product overhangs the deck (the number one cause of pallet failure I see), if it’s unusually heavy, or if it won’t sit squarely on a standard footprint, then grading the wrong-sized pallet is just optimizing the wrong thing. That’s when I steer clients toward a custom-engineered pallet sized to the actual load. The cheapest, highest-grade pallet in the world still fails if the product doesn’t fit it.
