Wood Pallets: The Structural Foundation of Your Supply Chain

Rodney Hernandez - President

By Rodney Hernandez

In my decades of experience, I’ve found that the most overlooked asset in a warehouse is often the most critical: the wood pallet. It is the literal foundation of your inventory. If that foundation is weak, inconsistent, or poorly chosen, your entire supply chain is at risk.

At Logical Packaging, I don’t believe in selling you “just a pallet.” I believe in providing the specific structural tool that matches your load, your budget, and your safety requirements. Wood remains the industry standard for a reason—it’s versatile, repairable, and cost-effective—but only if you choose the right grade for the job.

Grade A vs. Grade B: Making the Logical Choice for Your Budget

One of the most frequent questions I get is whether to invest in Grade A or Grade B pallets. The “logical” answer depends entirely on your application and how much your brand’s presentation matters.

  • Grade A (Premium & Standard): These are my “retail-ready” pallets. They have no stringer repairs (plugs) and offer the highest structural integrity. If you are shipping to big-box retailers or moving high-value goods where pallet failure isn’t an option, I always recommend Grade A. We offer these in both New and Recycled formats to help you balance quality with sustainability.
  • Grade B (Utility Grade): I often recommend Grade B for internal warehouse storage or one-way shipping where aesthetics don’t matter. These pallets are gently used and may have “plugs” (additional support boards) on the stringers. They are just as functional for heavy loads but come at a significantly lower price point.

Standard and Custom Dimensions: Precision at Every Size

Best Quality Pallets in Milwaukee

While the industry revolves around the “Standard 48×40,” I know that your products don’t always fit into a standard box. Using the wrong pallet size is a leading cause of product damage during transit.

I’ve overseen the production of everything from small 36×36 footprints to massive custom crates. Whether you need the standard GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) spec or a completely bespoke dimension to fit a unique piece of machinery, I ensure that the load-bearing logic is sound before a single nail is driven.

Common Sizes We Build and Source:

  • 48″ x 40″ (The Industry Standard)
  • 42″ x 42″ (Common for Telecommunications and Paint)
  • 48″ x 48″ (Ideal for Drums and Large Squares)
  • 36″ x 36″ (Beverage and Small Footprint)

Specialized Wood Pallet Solutions

Because every industry has its own “logic,” I have developed specialized tiers of wood pallets to meet specific regulatory and safety hurdles.

If your business requires more than a standard utility pallet, I encourage you to explore our specialized categories:

  • Food-Grade Pallets: For when hygiene and contamination-free history are your top priorities.
  • Heat-Treated Pallets: The essential choice for international export and ISPM-15 compliance.
  • Custom Crates & Skids: For those “un-packable” items that require a tailored structural solution

Optimize Your Inventory Strategy

Finding the right pallet supplier shouldn’t be a guessing game. I am here to help you audit your current usage and ensure you are using the most cost-effective grade for your specific needs. Logical FAQ

A: In most applications, yes. I carefully vet our recycled Grade A stock to ensure there are no cracked stringers or compromised deck boards. You get nearly identical performance to a new pallet while reducing your environmental footprint and your cost per load.

A: In my experience, it’s “over-hanging” the load. When your product extends past the deck boards, the pallet loses its structural “box” strength. If your load doesn’t fit a 48×40, let me help you design a custom size—it’s cheaper than a damaged shipment.

A: Yes. I often suggest “Combo” pallets—which use a mix of new and recycled components—as a middle-ground solution. It’s a logical way to get the strength of new stringers with the cost savings of recycled deck boards.

A: If you are using New Grade A pallets for internal warehouse storage or “one-way” trips to a customer who won’t return them, you are likely overspending. Let me look at your workflow; I can usually find a more logical Grade B or Recycled option that does the same job for 30% less.
